I didn't realize it took, layering, to be a viewer. The best ones could easily be used in a NY Times Mag header graphic. Where's the mystery? Where's the gaze?
I must balance these bad reviews. Boulton kicked butt in this show. The WAY he layers is original. repeated viewing reveals tons of visual depth excitment and originality. Keep up the great work. Portland is full of decorative abstraction. Boultan is unlike any of that! GREAT ART!
Boulton left Portland with an exciting signature style with some technical and philosphical problems.
He solved those problems but in turn lost the style, and maybe the hunger. They beat those things out of you in grad school. Now its just faux German painting with some LA levity. I'm sad and nobody wants to tell him he's lost his way. Now he's blending in, all the struggle in Portland was good for his art.
You guys all know so much about art. It's really impressive how articulate you are, especially the douche who wrote, "these paintings just flat out suck. just a bunch of moves that don't mean anything. bad bad bad, corperate labby art." What exactly is "corporate lobby art?" And since when do "moves" have to have meaning? Care to explain, doucheridge?
